FUGITIVE FROM INJUSTICE

In 1970 I was sitting on a subway platform bench reading a newspaper account about the capture of peace activist Dan Berrigan. He had been on the lam for several months after being convicted for destroying draft board records during the Viet Nam war. While on the run he would make public appearances and then disappear again. It got to be quite the guessing game as to where he would pop up next.

A man sitting next to me on the bench saw the photograph of Berrigan on the front page being led away by two FBI agents and said "makes you wonder who is really free."

Now almost fifty years later in the age of mass global surveillance I still wonder.

A dakini (Sanskrit: "sky dancer") is a Tantric priestess of ancient India who "carried the souls of the dead to the sky". This Buddhist figure is particularly upheld in Tibetan Buddhism. The dakini is a female being of generally volatile temperament, who acts as a muse for spiritual practice.
